Description
Brancacci Chapel tickets open the door to a fresco cycle nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel" of the first Renaissance. The chapel is part of Santa Maria del Carmine, a church in the San Frediano district.
The church was raised in the 1200s next to a Carmelite convent and was remodelled in the sixteenth century to meet the rules set by the Council of Trent. A fire in 1771 wiped out much of the interior and furnishings, yet the Brancacci Chapel came through and remains a showcase of church art.
Its paintings tell biblical stories: Adam and Eve driven out of Paradise, and Saint Peter curing the ill just by letting his shadow fall on them. A multimedia audio guide, offered in English, Spanish, French, Italian and German, explains the chapel's history as you study some of the most influential paintings of their period.
