Description
This Florence Duomo guided tour opens with an hour beside a licensed local guide, who speaks English and brings the history and architecture of the complex to life in person, with room for your questions. After that, the same ticket stays valid for three days, so you can return to each site whenever you like.
The centrepiece is the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, a showcase of Gothic architecture with marble floors, stained glass and Brunelleschi's dome, the biggest ever raised in brick. Below it, the Crypt of Santa Reparata reveals excavated ruins from the earliest days of Florence.
The climb up Giotto's Bell Tower means 414 steps, with several platforms where you can stop for breath and photographs of the red roofs, the dome and the Tuscan hills beyond. The Duomo Museum keeps original sculptures, among them pieces by Michelangelo and Donatello.
