Description

The Leonardo Interactive Museum in central Florence lets you try out machines built from da Vinci's codex drawings, with an audio guide on your phone. Entry suits visitors from about 7 or 8.

The Leonardo Interactive Museum puts da Vinci's drawings into your hands. You step up to machines built from the designs in his famous codices and try them out with care. The museum sits in the city centre and has been open for more than twenty years.

  • The tank and the catapult
  • The worm screw and the hydraulic saw
  • The printing press and the vertical screw
  • Interactive workshops where you build bridges, domes and polyhedrons

Around the machines you follow his work on engineering, anatomy, physics and painting, and see how many of his ideas still look surprisingly current five centuries later. It is a visit where you take part rather than just walk past, and it is meant for visitors aged 7 or 8 and over.

The ticket includes an audio guide that plays on your own smartphone (bring earphones) in six languages: Italian, English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese, plus free Wi-Fi. There is no live guide. A visit takes around an hour. Tickets are sold online only, and you pick the day and time, so you skip the queue at the door.
