Description

The Gallery of Modern Art fills the third floor of Palazzo Pitti in Florence: more than thirty rooms telling the story of Italian painting from Neoclassicism to the early decades of the 20th century. It's the right place if, after the Uffizi and the Renaissance, you want to see what came next.

The heart of the collection is the Macchiaioli, who painted light in "patches" (macchie) of color, alongside the French avant-garde. By Giovanni Fattori, one of the group's leading figures, there are The Italian Camp after the Battle of Magenta, The Palmieri Rotunda and his landscapes of the Maremma. In the first rooms, Hayez and Canova's Calliope.

Most of the Macchiaioli works come from the collection of Diego Martelli, an art critic and friend of the group, acquired in 1897. And the rooms have a story of their own: until the 1930s the Savoys stayed here when they visited the city, and the Ballroom is here too.
