Description
This Florence Duomo after hours tour starts in the piazza, once the cathedral has closed and the last visitors are queuing for the dome. With a guide and a group of up to 19, you skip that line and go straight in, then take the 463 steps up inside a dome with no equal in size, stopping on the way to see the frescoes up close.
The guide climbs with you and tells how the dome was raised, why Brunelleschi was not the obvious choice for the job and what puzzles engineers about his building methods. The climb is strenuous, and the reward is a view over Florence and the countryside around it.
Back down one level, the rarely visited terraces open just for your group, so you see the dome up close with nobody else around. Then you return to the main sanctuary, now closed to the public, and take in its details with plenty of room, with an art and architecture expert at your side. On your way out, the Key Master switches off the lights and the doors are locked behind you.
